📏 How to Calculate Dimensions for Cutting Binder’s Board

Remember - you can cut the board down but you can't add more on!

1️⃣ Measure Your Text Block (Book Pages)

You'll need three key dimensions:

Height (H) – Measure the height of the text block. (e.g. 19.6cm)

Width (W) – Measure the width of the text block. (e.g. 12.8 cm)

Thickness (T) – Measure the spine thickness when the book is closed. (e.g 4.2 cm)

2️⃣ Cut the Front & Back Covers

Height = H + 3 to 5 mm overhang at top and bottom. (e.g. 19.6 cm --> 20.6 cm)

Width = W + 2 to 4 mm overhang at the fore edge. (e.g. 12.8 cm --> 13.1 cm)

3️⃣ Cut the Spine Board (If Using One)

Height = Same as the covers. (e.g. 20.6cm)

Width = T + 1-2 mm for flexibility. (e.g. 4.2 cm --> 4.4 cm)

Vinyl Application Tips

Every cloth and vinyl combination behaves a little differently — that’s why we’ve included some extra test pieces for you to practice on before you commit to your book cover.

  1. Start with Test Swatches
    • Use the included scraps of cloth and vinyl to experiment first.
    • This helps you find the right temperature and timing for your iron without risking your actual book cover.
  2. Set Your Iron Correctly
    • Begin on a medium to low heat setting.
    • Too cool and it won’t stick, too hot and the plastic backing may warp.
  3. Apply Firm Pressure
    • Press the iron down firmly — don’t slide it around.
    • Hold in place for around 30 seconds.
  4. Cool Completely Before Peeling
    • Let the vinyl cool down fully before peeling the plastic backing.
    • Peel slowly from one corner.
  5. Check and Re-Press if Needed
    • If it’s sticking well, keep peeling carefully.
    • If a spot isn’t sticking, lay the plastic back down and press again.
    • You can raise the temperature slightly if needed, but avoid going too hot.
  6. Troubleshooting
    • Warping plastic backing? Heat is too high — lower your setting.
    • Small area not transferring? That spot probably didn’t get enough pressure or heat — just re-press.
    • Edges lifting? Focus the iron directly on the edge for a few more seconds.

💡 Extra Tip: Once the vinyl has transferred, give it a final gentle burnish (rub down with a clean cloth or bone folder) to make sure it’s fully adhered.
