For the apprentice ready to create something extraordinary.

Some stories deserve more than a new cover.

Beyond the dust-lined shelves of the bindery lies a cabinet of finer materials, reserved for volumes intended to become treasures. Richly textured book cloth. Gleaming premium vinyl. Artwork endpapers that reveal one final piece of the story each time the cover is opened.

The Premium Rebinding Kit contains everything you need to transform an ordinary paperback into a beautifully finished clothbound hardcover, using elevated materials and decorative finishing details for a more luxurious result.

You will remove the original cover, reinforce the spine, construct a new hardcover case, set in illustrated endpapers, add a ribbon bookmark and finish the volume with a pre-cut iron-on design chosen for the story within.

No previous bookbinding experience is required. Step-by-step video instructions will guide you through the complete process, from the first measurements at the workbench to the moment your finished volume takes its place in the library.

Please note: this kit is designed for rebinding one existing paperback, not constructing a book from loose pages.

The finer materials of the bindery

This kit was created for those who want their first rebind to feel less like a beginner’s project and more like a volume discovered in a private library.

You will work with:

  • Premium book cloth selected for its colour, texture and finish
  • Premium vinyl chosen to complement your cloth
  • Artwork endpapers designed to bring the world of the book inside its covers
  • A ribbon bookmark to bind into the spine
  • A miniature book charm and clamp for one final touch of bookish enchantment

Your available material and colour choices will be shown when ordering.

As book cloth, vinyl and artwork can appear slightly different between screens and physical materials, small variations are part of the handmade nature of the finished piece.

Choose the story your book will wear

Your kit includes your choice of a standard cover design from the Art & Parcel catalogue.

Most catalogue designs can be adapted with the title and author of your chosen book. This allows you to select an existing Art & Parcel design while using it for the particular story you wish to rebind.

Your premium iron-on vinyl will arrive pre-cut and ready for you to weed and apply.

For something entirely your own, select the Custom Cover Upgrade. Share the title, atmosphere, symbols, characters or details that matter to you, and Art & Parcel will create an original cover design especially for your project.

Choose your endpapers

Artwork endpapers are included as part of the Premium Kit and will be selected to complement your chosen book and materials.

These illustrated pages sit between the text block and its new cover, creating a final hidden detail that is revealed each time the book is opened.

Where multiple designs are available, you will be able to choose your preferred artwork when ordering.

Choose your volume

Select the size closest to the paperback you plan to transform:

  • Standard Paperback: the smaller, commonly used Australian novel format
  • Large Trade Paperback: the larger format often used for first releases and trade editions

Each kit allows some flexibility and will generally suit a book approximately 1 cm larger or smaller than the selected standard size.

Please measure your copy before ordering, as dimensions can vary between publishers and editions.

Need the book as well?

Choose the Include the Book option and tell us which title you would like to rebind.

We will source a suitable paperback edition and place it inside your parcel, ready for its transformation.

Availability and additional cost may vary depending on the title and edition requested.

What you must bring to the workbench

You will also need:

  • A paperback book, unless selected as an add-on
  • Scissors
  • A household iron
  • A ruler
  • A craft knife or box cutter
  • A cutting mat

A craft knife, ruler and cutting mat are strongly recommended for accurate trimming and clean edges.

Your path through the bindery

Your video instructions will guide you through:

  • Preparing the original paperback
  • Removing the existing cover
  • Reinforcing and finishing the spine
  • Measuring and cutting the binder’s board
  • Constructing the new hardcover case
  • Wrapping the case in premium book cloth
  • Adding headbands and ribbon
  • Trimming and setting in the artwork endpapers
  • Casing the text block into its new cover
  • Testing heat and pressure on the supplied practice materials
  • Weeding and applying the premium vinyl design
  • Pressing and finishing the completed volume
  • Adding the miniature book charm as a final decorative detail

Before you begin the final cover

Premium materials can behave differently depending on their texture and finish.

Use the included practice cloth and vinyl strips to test the temperature, pressure and timing of your iron before applying the design to your finished case.

Some cover designs contain finer details and may require more patience to weed. Work slowly with the fine-point metal tool and allow each part of the artwork to reveal itself piece by piece.

Bookbinding is a craft learned through the hands.

Your first rebind may carry a few small quirks. A line may not be perfectly straight. A corner may reveal the hand of its maker. A detail may belong only to your copy.

These are not failures. They are the marks of a book made rather than manufactured, and the beginning of mastery.

When the work is complete

Close the cover and hold the finished volume in your hands.

Run your fingers across the cloth. Open it to reveal the artwork hidden within. Let the ribbon fall between the pages. Add the charm, place the book beside the stories you love and know that no other copy will be quite like it.

Give it as a gift. Begin a matching collection. Transform the story you return to again and again. Or let this be the first volume in a library made slowly, carefully and entirely by you.

And when the next story calls, your tools will already be waiting.
